Concert versions of shows are becoming quite the rage in
New York theatre, being perfect for benefits. They feature minimal sets,
minimal costuming, and generally the actors carry their scripts with them.
The beauty of the concert production is that the performers are the feature of
the show, as there is nothing to distract the audience from what is going on in
the show and the performance of each individual actor. Besides the
memorable melodies, much of the dialogue of the original production is retained
in order to make the show flow together.
Guys and Dolls is centered around gambler Nathan
Detroit. Nathan runs "The Oldest Established Permanent Floating Crap Game in New
York" and he needs money to secure a location. Therefore, he makes a "sure bet"
with fellow gambler, Sky Masterson, that he can't convince the next girl he sees
to go to Havana with him. A "sure bet", because the next girl Sky sees is Miss
Sarah Brown, a chaste Salvation Army-type reformer. Miss Sarah Brown has her own
problems, being short on sinners at her mission. The stage is set for an
enjoyable evening of gamblers, show girls and mission workers. The beautiful
score by Frank Loesser has been delighting audiences since 1950.
